Automatic waterer installation with all plumbing and electrical hidden inside of the wall

The Cleanest Way to Install an Automatic Waterer

If you're setting up an automatic waterer for horses, the way you install it matters almost as much as the unit itself. A common approach is running water and electric lines along the outside of your barn wall which works fine. But it leaves hardware exposed, creates a cluttered look, and can mean more wear on your lines over time.

There's a better way. The hollow-wall hookup is our #1 recommended installation method for the Cascada automatic horse waterer, and it's the approach we'd choose for our own barn. Everything — plumbing, electrical, fittings — routes through the wall cavity and hides completely behind the unit. The only thing visible from the exterior is the Cascada housing itself.

This guide walks through every step, with photos and a technical diagram, so you have everything you need to get it done right the first time.

Horse hydration starts with a great install

Proper horse hydration is one of the most important factors in equine health — horses need access to fresh, clean water around the clock, and you need access to their hydration activity to keep track of their drinking and overall health. An automatic horse waterer like the Cascada automatic waterer solves for this. Start your journey with Cascada by installing in a way where there are no exposed lines that can freeze, get bumped, or become difficult to access. The hollow-wall method addresses all of that upfront, giving your horse a reliable water source and you a system that's built to last.

Surface mount vs. hollow-wall hookup

The surface wall mount shown below, while a workable option, does create more exposure to weather, horse antics, and wear.

Then we have the star of the show - the clean, professional finish installation behind the device. All plumbing and electrical are hidden behind the Cascada and/or inside the wall. Just the Cascada horse waterer housing.

How to set up a hollow-wall horse waterer hookup

1. Cut a hole in the gasket and wall for the valve assembly

Using a sharp utility knife, cut a hole in the Cascada rubber gasket large enough for the valve assembly to pass through. Then cut the matching opening in your barn wall. This opening is what allows you to seat the valve assembly inside the wall cavity — the foundation of the entire hollow-wall install.

💡PRO TIP: Cut carefully and do a dry fit before making permanent connections — you want just enough clearance for the valve body to rotate cleanly through the gasket and wall.

2. Rotate the valve assembly 90 degrees into the wall cavity

Once the gasket and wall opening are prepped, rotate the Cascada valve assembly 90 degrees so it passes through the wall and sits inside the cavity, connecting to your supply line from the inside. This is the key step that makes the hollow-wall hookup possible — when done correctly, the entire plumbing connection is hidden behind the unit.

3. Install a backing block inside the wall for a secure mount

Cut a 2×6 or 2×8 lumber block to fit horizontally between your studs at the mounting height, and fasten it securely with lag screws through the studs. This backing block is what the valve assembly screws into — it's the anchor point for your entire Cascada automatic waterer. Without it, the unit won't have a solid mount inside the wall.

💡PRO TIP: The block face should be flush with or slightly recessed from the wall sheathing so the Cascada housing sits flat against the exterior once mounted. Recommended mounting height is 42" from ground to center of the unit.

4. Install the provided Y-filter and a water shutoff upline

Install the Y-filter and a shutoff valve to the water supply line before it enters the wall — not directly attached to the Cascada housing. While these aren't accessed often, Installing these upline means you can flush and service it without ever touching the waterer itself.

💡PRO TIP: While you're in the cavity, wrap supply lines with your chosen insulation. This helps your Cascada's built-in heater work efficiently and protects water lines against freeze points in extreme cold.

5. Mount the housing, connect everything, and test

Attach the Cascada housing to the exterior wall over the valve assembly, confirm it's level, then turn on the water supply. Check every connection for leaks, run through the unit's setup process, and verify it's filling and shutting off correctly. Step back and take a look — that's what a perfectly installed equine auto waterer should look like.

Recommended: Add an access door for easy long-term maintenance

Once everything is inside the wall, add a small access door — either from inside the stall or from the other side of the wall if your layout allows. This gives you easy reach to the Y-filter and water shutoff without having to touch the device or fully open up the wall.

The benefits of the hollow-wall hookup

✨ Clean Exterior Finish

No exposed pipes, fittings, or filters — just the Cascada horse waterer housing on a clean barn wall.

🔒 Protected Plumbing

Water and electric lines inside the wall stay away from the elements, curious horses, and incidental damage.

🛠️ Easy Maintenance Access

An access door keeps your filter and shutoff reachable for the routine service that keeps water clean and flowing.

❄️ Better Freeze Protection

Insulated lines inside the wall combined with Cascada's built-in heater give you a system designed for horse watering all year long.

Horse automatic waterer install: common questions

What height should a horse automatic waterer be mounted at?

For standard-size horses, The recommended mounting height for a Cascada automatic horse waterer is 42 inches from the ground to the center of the housing. This gives most horses comfortable access without requiring them to reach too low or stretch too high. Adjust slightly for miniature horses or draft breeds if needed.

Do automatic horse waterers freeze in winter?

The Cascada automatic waterer includes a built-in heating element designed to prevent the waterer from freezing. For full freeze protection, you should also ensure your supply line drops below the local frost line before rising up to the unit, and that lines inside the wall cavity are insulated with foam pipe insulation. This combination — Cascada's heater plus properly insulated supply lines — is the recommended approach for winter horse watering in cold climates. A heated or insulated bucket can also be used to protect the water from freezing.

What is a Y-filter and why does it matter for a horse waterer?

A Y-strainer (Y-filter) is a small inline filter that catches sediment and debris before they reach your automatic horse waterer's valve. Without it, grit and mineral buildup can cause the valve to stick or fail. The Y-filter should be positioned on the supply line before it enters the wall — not directly on the unit — so it can be easily cleaned without disturbing the waterer.

Can I install a Cascada automatic waterer on both sides of a barn wall?

Yes — the Cascada is designed for this. When installing an equine auto waterer on both sides of the same wall, use a T-fitting instead of a 90° elbow at the water connection inside the wall cavity. This lets both units share a single supply line, cutting down on plumbing work and keeping the wall cavity tidy.

How often does a horse automatic waterer need maintenance?

Routine maintenance for an automatic horse waterer includes cleaning the Y-filter as needed (more often in areas with hard water or high sediment), wiping down the device periodically, and checking connections and the heating element before each winter season. The hollow-wall install makes this easier by keeping the filter and shutoff accessible via an access door.
