Get to Know Your Cascada Waterer

Let's become more acquainted with your new automatic waterer, designed to take the work and worry out of watering.

The Waterer

Helpful notes regarding your new Cascada automatic waterer:

  • The device turns on as soon as the electrical is connected. There is no power on/off on the device. If you want to power off the device you can turn off power to the unit at your breaker. You will know the device is on if there are lights at the unit (default light state: solid blue. Light state definitions listed below).
  • The Cascada waterer requires a 5-gallon flat-back bucket of any color or style (standard, heated, or insulated).
  • The sensors detect when a bucket is present, or not, which means you can freely remove the bucket whenever you need and the waterer will not fill until a bucket is replaced.
  • On standard fill mode, the waterer will not fill until the water level is below 50% of the bucket. On "easy lift" mode, the waterer refills when the water level is at 25% up to 50% until reset in the app to standard fill mode.

Waterer FAQs + Troubleshooting

What do I do if there are no lights on the device?

If you don't see lights on your device, this means it is not receiving power.

Ensure power is hooked up correctly. Refer to the instructions and image on Page 10 of the PDF installation guide located on our installation page.

If that is confirmed to be wired correctly, use a voltage tester to identify where the power is failing:

  • From the high voltage into the power supply (may indicate bad high voltage connection)
  • From the power supply to the low voltage (may indicate you need a different power supply that our team will provide)
  • From the low voltage to the unit (may indicate a bad low voltage wire that our team can replace).

This information will help our team know how to best assist you! If you are unable to finalize troubleshooting, message our team at 800-959-8045 (call or text).

What do I do if there are lights on the device, but it is not filling?

First, power cycle your units. Turn power to the waterers off (at the breaker), wait at least 60 seconds, and then turn the power back on.

This should trigger the device to show a series of multicolor lights ending with the waterer filling (if bucket is present) and then presenting the default blue. If that is not the case, shoot our team a message at 800-959-8045 (call or text).

What do I do if the buckets are not filling to the top after installation?

Cascada's standard fill mode fills your buckets at or above the beveled edge of a standard 5-gallon flat-back bucket. If you have the app installed, you can easily see if the water level is where it is supposed to be in the "Devices" section. A full bucket on standard fill should read 98%-100%. If the water level is consistently filling below that on standard fill mode, here are a few troubleshooting steps:

  1. Ensure you completed the initial rounds of bucket dumping/filling. We recommend 4-6 full fills and dumps of the bucket on a newly installed Cascada waterer to clear out any debris or air in the water lines. If you see the water line is progressively getting higher throughout this process (closer to the standard fill level) after the recommended 4-6 dumps/fills, try a few more - this may indicate extra air/debris in your lines that need to clear out.
  2. If you have the waterer connected in the app, go to the "Devices" section and toggle ON Easy Lift. Dump the bucket and return it to fill (with this setting is meant to only fill 50%). Now toggle easy lift "OFF", dump the bucket one more time and return. It should fill the bucket up to 100%. If this resolves your issue, this should not be a continued experience and the bucket will fill at the level set by you (standard or easy lift).
What do the different light colors mean?
  • Light Blue, Solid: Normal, bucket detected
  • White, Pulsing: Bucket detected, waiting to fill
  • White, Solid: Bucket filling, valve is open
  • Yellow, Pulsing: Bucket missing, not filling
  • Yellow, Solid: Horse detected
  • Dark Blue, Pulsing: Looking for phone
  • Dark Blue, Solid: Paired with phone
  • Green, Solid: Connecting to wifi and server
  • Blue/Yellow/White, Sequencing: Connection to the phone is ending OR reconnecting to power
  • Red, Solid: Button pressed too long, taking too long to fill, or needs power cycle
What does the button do next to the light sensor?

The button to the left of the sensor is used for pairing your Cascada to the app. This button does not impact the waterer's functionality.

Get to Know the Cascada App

Way more than a water meter. Always know how much your horse is drinking, now on your phone!

Cascada App Setup

  1. Download the Cascada app from the Apple or Google Play app stores.
  2. Once you create your profile, get started by connecting your first device in the app. Video below demonstrating this process. We recommend naming the devices in reference to their location rather than the name of the horse using them in case horses move stalls/paddocks.
  3. Create horse profiles in the app and link to connected devices.
  4. In just a few minutes the device will register with the server and you will see the bucket's fill level and any drinking data from the linked horse to that device.
  5. Optional: Try out easy lift mode by toggling ON in the "Devices" page of the app. This setting notifies the waterer to keep buckets only half-full (once the horses drink them down) so they are easier to remove on bucket cleaning days. Return to standard fill, but toggling easy lift mode OFF.

You're ready to start hydration tracking! See notes below on common questions regarding how the hydration tracking features work.

Connect Your Cascada Waterer to the App

Hydration Tracking FAQs

Do I need to have WiFi in my barn?

Yes - to use the app, the Cascada must be in range of reliable WiFi.

Does dumping the bucket for cleaning count in my horses’ water consumption?

No, the sensors detect when a bucket has been removed and does not count the refill when tracking hydration.

How long does it take to see hydration data in the app?

It takes 60-90 seconds for the app to record drinks. The app page updates automatically when new data is available, but you can also pull down on the page to see if there is new refreshed data.

How long does it take to see averages?

The app requires 7-10 days worth of data to formulate initial averages. They become more fine tuned after 2 weeks and continue to refine over time the more data it has to learn from.

How can I test the hydration tracking?

You can test hydration tracking in the app by scooping out water from the bucket. Removing and dumping the bucket will not show record of drinks as the device knows when the bucket has been removed and does not track that refill as a drink.

It takes 60-90 seconds for the app to record drinks. The app page updates automatically when new data is available, but you can also pull down on the page to see if there is new refreshed data.

Can others at my facility use the Cascada app?

Yes! Simply provide them with the login credentials.

What happens to the data if my horse is gone for a while?

There is a feature in the app that allows you to easily turn off data tracking when your horse is away at a competition or on a trip to ensure the app is only tracking your horse’s normal routine.

Don’t worry, buckets will always refill even when tracking is off that way you can let another horse “borrow” the waterer and it won’t impact the horse’s hydration data.

What level of data does the app track?

The waterer's advanced sensor technology enables the Cascada system with accurate, reliable, and detailed hydration tracking.

In the app, you'll have access to how much your horses drink within each hour of the day, monitored by the waterer every minute. You'll also see prior days' water consumption. As the app learns your horses "normal", more insights will be available in the app such as daily and by-the-minute averages (as visualized in the hydration rings). Averages and more advanced insights become visible after 7-10 days.

Will I lose my horses' data if they move stalls and start using a different Cascada waterer?

Nope! The app is horse-centric meaning the data follows your horse not the device. Change your horses' waterer by either editing their horse profile or editing the device.

What happens if the internet connection goes out or is unreliable?

Cascada will buffer your horses' drinking data for up to a week to account for internet outages. If the connection resumes, even momentarily, Cascada will quickly send the data to the cloud to be displayed on the app. The app will notifiy you if your Cascadas loose their internet connection so that you can troubleshoot.

Does my phone need to be close to the waterer to get the drinking data?

No! Cascada sends the data to the cloud so that it can be viewed on the app anywhere in the world! So go on vacation and still know how your horse is drinking or check on your other horses back at the barn while you are away at a show.

Does the app cost?

Full hydration monitoring is free to all device owners!

Install and connect your Cascada waterers to see full stats on your horses' current and average drinking. Plus access features such as bucket water level and Easy Lift Mode.

Can I keep track of more than one bucket for one horse?

Yes! This is one of our favorite features of the app. You can track multiple bucket activity for one horse meaning you can see how much your horse is drinking in their stall, paddock, and/or field all aggregated within their personalized profile in the app. This is the best way to fully monitor your horses' hydration.

The Cascada app is not showing as available in my country...

The Cascada app is available worldwide, but may not be enabled in your country. If you run into this issue, please send a text to our team at 800-959-8045 letting us know what country you are located in and we will enable it for you within just few business days.

What do I do if my device doesn't pair?
  1. Try resetting your device's bluetooth connection by holding down the button for 13 seconds. When you release the button after 13 seconds, the device will go through a light sequencing process. Once that is complete, attempt the pairing process again.
  2. Ensure your phone's operating system is up to date. The Cascada app works on all smartphones, however the bluetooth pairing process requires a modern operating system. Sometimes older phones may not have the ability to update operating systems. If you have an older phone or operating system, try borrowing someone else's newer phone just for the device connection process. Once connected you should not have any issue using the app and tracking data.
